About Lesson

Generating the Qi Ball

In Taoist energy cultivation, the lower tan tien (navel region) is the foundation of our internal power — the centre where Qi is stored, refined, and strengthened. Just as a seed is planted in fertile soil before it can grow into a strong tree, Qi must be cultivated and condensed in the lower tan tien before it can be effectively used for healing, balance, or energetic work.

One of the most tangible and effective ways to build Qi in the lower tan tien is by generating a Qi ball, an energetic sphere of condensed life force that can be used for healing, protection, or energetic development.

The exercises in this Section guide you through the process of building energy in your lower tan tien.

Preliminary Practice

To cultivate internal power, we must seal the Qi within the body, ensuring that the vital life force we generate is contained, refined, and available for use rather than dissipating outward.

The Taoists view the body as an interconnected energy system where Qi flows freely through channels and meridians. However, they also recognise that certain areas of the body act as both entry and exit points for energy. These apertures, or openings, are natural pathways where Qi can either be drawn in or lost.

The key apertures include:

  • The anus – Associated with grounding energy and elimination.
  • The genitals – Connected to sexual energy and vital essence (Jing).
  • The mouth – Governs speech, breath, and the intake of external energy (food, air).
  • The ears – Receives vibrational energy (sound) and influences internal balance.
  • The eyes – Absorbs light, visual stimuli, and external Qi.
  • The nose – Regulates breath, scent, and the intake of airborne energy.

In order to seal the Qi within the body, we must close those apertures. The Taoists refer to this as “closing the back door, closing the front door and closing the windows”, where the ‘back door’ is the anus, the ‘front door’ is the genitals, and the ‘windows’ are all the openings in the head. We will talk more about this in Section 11.

When building Qi in the lower tan tien, the most crucial aperture to seal is the perineum — the area between the anus and the genitals. If the perineum remains relaxed or open, energy naturally escapes downward, making it difficult to accumulate and store Qi in the body.

To prevent this, Taoist practices emphasise tightening and engaging the perineum, especially during energy-building exercises. This creates a closed energetic circuit, allowing Qi to rise upward rather than dissipating downward and outward.

Before learning to control and seal energy, it is essential to develop awareness and sensitivity in the perineum. Many people are unfamiliar with this part of the body unless they have practiced Kegel exercises or engaged in Moola Bandha (root lock) in yogic traditions.

The perineum is known as the “root” or foundation of the body’s energy system. A strong and engaged perineum enhances:

  • Physical strength and core stability.
  • Sexual vitality and reproductive health.
  • The ability to hold and refine energy for internal growth.

Techniques to Awaken Perineum Sensitivity

(i) Basic Perineum Awareness Exercise

  • Sit comfortably with your spine upright and your attention on the area between the anus and the genitals.
  • Gently contract the perineum—as if you were stopping the flow of urine or holding in a bowel movement.
  • Hold the contraction for a few seconds, then relax completely.
  • Repeat 10 times, noticing the sensations and gradually increasing control.

(ii) Sequential Perineum Force

  • Sit comfortably with your spine upright and your attention on the area between the anus and the genitals.
  • With as much force as you can, contract the perineum, hold for 2 seconds and then release. This would represent a 100% contraction.
  • Rest for a moment, allowing the muscle to reset.
  • Now, contract the perineum again, but this time using 90% of your maximum force. Hold for 2 seconds, then fully release.
  • Contract the perineum at 80% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 70% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 60% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 50% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 40% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 30% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 20% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • Contract at 10% strength, hold for 2 seconds, and release.
  • After completing the full sequence, take a few deep, natural breaths and observe the sensations in the perineum and lower abdomen.
  • Notice the subtle awareness and control you have developed.

(iii) Engaging the Perineum with Breath

  • Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, gently lift and contract the perineum.
  • Inhale again, holding the perineum up, and then exhale, releasing the contraction slowly and mindfully.
  • Repeat this for several breaths, synchronising the movement with the natural flow of breath.

(iv) Pulse Activation (Kegel Exercise Variation)

  • Perform quick, rhythmic contractions of the perineum, pulsing the muscles rapidly for 10–20 repetitions.
  • This strengthens the muscular control and enhances sensitivity.

(v) Holding & Engaging the Perineum During Practice

  • Once you develop awareness, practice holding a light contraction (15-25% contraction) during energy-building exercises.
  • The goal is not tight tension, but rather a gentle lift that creates an internal energetic seal.

Many people unknowingly lose their energy because they are not conscious of how Qi moves through the body. Sealing the perineum is not about clenching tightly or creating tension, but rather about gently engaging and directing energy where it is needed.

By mastering the control of the perineum, practitioners retain, refine, and strengthen their internal energy, leading to:

  • Heightened awareness of Qi flow.
  • Enhanced stability, both physically and emotionally.
  • A deeper capacity for energy transformation and spiritual growth.

In the following exercises, we will apply this principle to Qi-building practices, ensuring that the energy we cultivate is effectively sealed, stored, and refined within the body.
